A steam engine is a heat engine that performs mechanical work using steam as its working fluid. The steam engine uses the force produced by steam pressure to push a piston back and forth inside a cylinder. This pushing force can be transformed, by a connecting rod and crank, into rotational force for work. The term "steam engine" is most commonly applied to reciprocating engines as just described, although some authorities have also referred to the steam turbine and devices such as Hero's aeolipile as "steam engines". The essential feature of steam engines is that they are external combustion engines, where the working fluid is separated from the combustion products. The ideal thermodynamic cycle used to analyze this process is called the Rankine cycle. In general usage, the term steam engine can refer to either complete steam plants, such as railway steam locomotives and portable engines, or may refer to the piston or turbine machinery alone, as in the beam engine and stationary steam engine.

ಉಗಿಯಂತ್ರ (ಉಗಿಎಂಜಿನ್): ಉಗಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಉಷ್ಣಶಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಯಾಂತ್ರಿಕಶಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನಾಗಿ ಪರಿವರ್ತಿಸುವ ಸಾಧನ. ಇದರ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಬಿಡಿಭಾಗಗಳು ಉರುಳೆ (ಸಿಲಿಂಡರ್) ಮತ್ತು ಅದರೊಳಗೆ ಹಿಂದಕ್ಕೂ ಮುಂದಕ್ಕೂ ಚಲಿಸುವ ಒಂದು ಆಡುಬೆಣೆ ಕೊಂತ (ಪಿಸ್ಟನ್). ಈ ಹಿಂದು-ಮುಂದು ವಿಚ್ಛಿನ್ನ ಚಲನೆಯನ್ನು ವೃತ್ತಾಕಾರದ ಅವಿಚ್ಛಿನ್ನ ಚಲನೆಯನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮಾರ್ಪಡಿಸಲು ಆಡುಬೆಣೆಯ ದಂಡವನ್ನು ವೃತ್ತಾಕಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ತಿರುಗುವ ಒಂದು ಗಾಲಿಯ ಮಗ್ಗುಲಿಗೆ ವಕ್ರದಂಡದ ಸಹಾಯದಿಂದ ಜೋಡಿಸಿದೆ. ಇನ್ನು ಆಡುಬೆಣೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಪತನವಾಗುವ ಸಂಮರ್ದ ಸಮಪ್ರಮಾಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುವುದಿಲ್ಲವಾದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅದರ ಹಿಂದು-ಮುಂದು ಚಲನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತತ್ಪರಿಣಾಮವಾಗಿ ಗಾಲಿಯ ವೃತ್ತಾಕಾರದ ಚಲನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಏರಿಳಿತಗಳು ತಲೆದೋರುತ್ತವೆ. ಎಂದರೆ ಗಾಲಿಯ ಚಲನೆ ಒಂದು ನಿಯತ ದರದಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಇದನ್ನೇ ನಿಯಂತ್ರಿಸಿ, ಗಾಲಿಯ ಉರುಳಾಟವನ್ನು ಸಮವೇಗದಲ್ಲಿಡಲು ಒಂದು ಗತಿನಿಯಂತ್ರಕ ಗಾಲಿಯನ್ನು (ಫ್ಲೈವೀಲ್) ಯಂತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಅಳವಡಿಸಿದೆ. ಗರಿಷ್ಠ ಸಂಮರ್ದದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಉಗಿಯನ್ನು ಉರುಳೆಯೊಳಗೆ ಬಿಡಲು ಮತ್ತು ಕಾರ್ಯವೆಸಗಿದ ಉಗಿಯನ್ನು ಹೊರಹಾಕಲು ಒಂದೊಂದು ಕವಾಟ ಇದೆ. ಉಗಿ ಯಂತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ಏಕಮಾರ್ಗ-ಅಥವಾ-ದ್ವಿಮಾರ್ಗ-ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯ ರೀತಿಯವೆಂದೂ ಹಾರಿಜ ಅಥವಾ ಲಂಬ ರೀತಿಯವೆಂದೂ ಸ್ಥೂಲವಾಗಿ ವಿಂಗಡಿಸಬಹುದು. ಅವು ಪುರೈಸುವ ಉದ್ದೇಶವನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸಿಯೂ ಉಗಿಯಂತ್ರಗಳ ವಿಂಗಡಣೆ ಮಾಡುವುದಿದೆ. ಶಕ್ತಿ ಉತ್ಪಾದನಯಂತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊದಲಿನದಾದ ಉಗಿಯಂತ್ರ ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ವಿಶ್ವಾಸಾರ್ಹವಾದ ಮತ್ತು ಸರಳವಾದ ಏಕೈಕ ಯಂತ್ರ. ಅಂತರ್ದಹನ, ಉಗಿತಿರುಬಾನಿ ಮುಂತಾದ ಯಂತ್ರಗಳ ಉದಯದಿಂದ ಉಗಿಯಂತ್ರದ ಬಳಕೆ ಗಮನಾರ್ಹವಾಗಿ ಕಡಿಮೆಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಅಗ್ಗದ ಉರುವಲು ಲಭಿಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ಉಗಿ ಯಂತ್ರವೇ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಉಪಯುಕ್ತ ಮತ್ತು ಲಾಭದಾಯಕ.
